Schema
I follow a certain schema for stuff that I carry around all the time. In the morning, the first thing I do after getting dressed is to take each thing from its place around my desk and put it on my person, a routine I refer to (internally) as “loading my pockets.” At the end of the day (after brushing my teeth but before changing into my pajamas), I do the same, in reverse.
Left pants pocket:
- My Cross pen. The only pen I’ve ever liked enough to get an ink refill for instead of throwing it away when it ran out.
- Wallet — brown, leather, endearingly creased. Inside: various cards, fortune cookie fortunes (“You will take a chance on something in the near future”), cash, one folded-up blank piece of paper for jotting stuff down, receipts. A laminated piece of yellow paper with about 50 important phone numbers.
- Business card holder, made of duct tape. Kristen gave it to me, it is sweet.
Right pants pocket:
- Regular pens and pencils, as necessary.
- Chap stick (SPF 30). Someone once told me they’d read that people who live in cultures where they’ve never used shampoo will have nice hair no matter what, but people who have used shampoo since they were a baby will become dependent on it. That’s probably a lie, but I could believe it about chap stick. I always need more.
- Keychain, on a lanyard. The lanyard hangs out of my pocket, so that I can reach down quickly and be sure that I have my keys. Before I had the lanyard, I would lock the keys in my room. Also on the keychain is one of those miniature discount cards for my favorite bookstore, which I regret getting because they send me junk e-mail. But hey, discount books.
Backpack:
- Camera. One of the primary motivations for the daily photo project was to force me to carry the camera everywhere. It really does pay to have it with me constantly, except that one time they confiscated it from me at the movie theater. Also, it has 128MB of memory and can be used in a pinch to transfer files between computers.
- Books, notebooks, binders. As needed.
- This time of year, my hat. Assuming it’s not on my head. It (the hat, not my head) is blue and white and very dashing, and when I put it on I think of that picture of Zeldman with the winter hat and the camera. From the cover of his book.
- One extra pen, in case I somehow manage to misplace the primary stash (right pocket) and the all-purpose backup (Cross). This has happened.
Things whose absence from the list is significant:
- A cell phone. I’m almost the only person I know around here who doesn’t have one, and I’m not eager to get one.
- My Boston pocket atlas. At first I would keep it in my backpack whenever I went, well, anywhere, but now I’ve become slightly more familiar with the city and slightly less paranoid. Sort of.

I do the exact same thing in the morning… except not quite as interesting, hehe.
Left pocket is chapstick and keys; right pocket is pens (either my black or green Pilot P-700); and back right pocket is wallet, which has random stuffs in it.
